Farewell Derek,
It has been an honour to know you. You and Sue have grown a family characterised by generosity, musicality, humour, love, courage and care. May you travel well to your next destination and enjoy the reconnection with Sue and Maeve.

My tears are mingled with yours with sorrow and joy. Truly wonderful to be able to join with you all.
How we loved Derek and how beautifully you expressed that. Thank you for making it possible to be present with you. I sang in that choir with Derek, Sue and Linda under the baton of Christopher Wrench.
The door was always open in that St Lucia household. Robyn was still at high school studying in her downstairs den. I’m still singing and will dedicate my next concert to Derek. May you all be truly blessed. With love and great memories, Kate Dormer (nee Michael) London

Dear Paul and all of Derek’s family, I offer my sincere sympathy in your loss.
But there is so much to rejoice and be grateful for Derek’s life well and joyfully lived.
I was very happy to have Derek as a dedicated colleague in the Department of Civil Engineering at UQ for many years and I valued his often stated support for “fearless leader” as he called me.
I am glad that I was able to be there for the wonderful tribute and celebration of Derek’s life at Christ Church.
I am sorry that I was not able to stay on after the Memorial to speak to you but I had to go to collect a grand-daughter – I am sure that Derek would understand that.
